Another idea from the designer show house - scrapbook paper art.
Take a regular sheet of 12 x 12 scrapbook paper, apply glue to the back (or use Scotch tape if you're like me and not too particular), and attach the paper to a piece of foamboard. Use your utility knife to trim the board to the edges of the paper and you've got instant art. (It's best if you glue the paper to a corner of the foamboard, then you're assured of having at least two perfectly straight edges.)
These panels are so cheap and easy to make that you can change them with the seasons or just your mood. I use Command Strips to hang mine, so I don't even have to commit to a nail hole.
